Polygon Data source

Hi all!!

Reading about polygon data sources in map point I understood that the process starts by creating a polygon data source, then uploading it to map point server and then getting the map with the polygons painted on it.

I would like to ask if it possible to create a data source on the fly (inside your application) and then ask for a map with the polygons painted on it. Can I do that ? Am I obliged to upload my data source first? My application displays a grid and I would like to change it's granularity on the fly.
