Quality of MapPoint Geodatabase.

January 31, 2005

Hello,

Broward County is in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale metro area. The county population, at the time of the 2000 census, was 1,623,018. A comprehesive, free geodataset has been available for download for at least 5 years at: <<http://gis.broward.org/gisdata/default.htm. Broward County has been a rapid growth county but the basic structure of city layout has not changed in years. In other words its not a backwater nor a developmentally new area.

I'm writing a web application that uses MapPoint Web Service. My clients deliver items to addresses in South Florida (primarily in Broward County) and they want address validation to the block number. They want to enter an address, city, and state and get a resultset of possible valid addresses. I have entered the following addresses into the web service with the best result not returning the correct city. The city name has to be accurate because the delivery drivers, like postal workers, work the address resolution backwards (i.e. they look at the city first). Here are some sample queries and results.

Query: 5900 71 Terrace, Parkland, FL
Result: 5900 71 Terrace, Pompano Beach, FL, 33067

Query: 7745 Johnson Street, Pembroke Pines, FL
Result: 7745 Johnson Street, Hollywood, FL, 33024

Query: 13612 State Road 84, Davie, FL
Result: 13612 State Road 84, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33325

Query: 1625 N. Commerce Parkway, Weston, FL
Result: 1625 N. Commerce Parkway, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33326

Query: 6950 Cypress Road, Plantation, FL
Result: 6950 Cypress Road, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33317

In each of these cases the map renders correctly and even the correct city will be displayed on the map. The problem is that the city name is being undermined in the result set of possible addresses.

MapQuest maps correctly and the result set of possible addresses includes the correct city.

Yes, the clients print out a map but the city of the address does not match up with the map and therefore confusion ensues.

Question: Am I using the correct data source name(findAddressSpec.DataSourceName = "MapPoint.NA")? Is this a known geodatabase problem? Has my account been assigned to a less than up to date server? I would like to know soon so that I can find an alternative source if the MapPoint geodatabase is just not accurate enough for my intented usage?
