I want to put a pushpin halfway between two railway stations - easy enough as I have the longs and lats of the stations. However I need the pushpin to be on the railway line; even if the track is curved between the two stations.
As far as I can see, there is no way to do this as the tracks (along with the roads, rivers etc) are on a single inaccessible layer. But I am willing to be proved wrong!!

The way I would try to approach this is get the railroad lines in a GIS format such as mif/mid, take the point you are already calculating, and then use some external "nearest line to point" alghorithm. I don't really have any more specific suggestion off the top of my head, check Directions Mag for GIS components, perhaps Blue Marble Geo? Also, I don't know where you'd get the railroads in vector form for the UK, perhaps Ordnance Survey?
