No, as far as I know you cannot make this setting persistent. and now answering this question (and knock on my brain) my statement of setting it to false in the invisible control will probably nothing do on the speed.

Hi,
Ok, ItineraryVisible=false is back at every route.calculate. Due to the fact that the visible control only gets a recalculated route, when the driver missed the turn or when a waypoint has been reached, a single flash of the map every now and then is not a problem.
I will use the next couple of days to try to make things a litte faster
and clean up some code. When done, i will post some of the code, maybe it is useable for you guys also ....
