Saving mappoint map as jpeg to save to Filemaker

I am new to mappoint and want to save my created mappoint 2009 map as a jpeg so I can add the jpeg'd map to a filemaker database. I can only seem to get it to a gif file, which I don't know what the hell that is. I can manipulate the gif file to fit into the filemaker file but it is blurry and unusable. I think a jpeg is what I need. Is this possible or is the someway to save a mappoint file and be able to manipulate down in size but keep it clear and unblurred. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think if you copy the map into Paint (or similar) you can then save it as jpeg.

Yes Paint should do the trick.

GIF is an image format that goes back to the dial modem days of the 1980s. It works pretty well - especially for line drawings, but is limited to 256 colors. It is one of the standard image types supported by web pages (along with JPG and PNG).

However I would actually recommend against a JPG. It would be smaller, but it is a lossy format - you can specify how much detail is kept and how small the file is. The compression will result in artifacts which are particularly obvious on things like line drawings and maps (but not photos, where JPGs are ideal).

Things like maps, line drawings, etc are usually much better as GIFs or PNGs (PNG is a modern patent-free version of the GIF. The main advantage in the 21st century is that it supports more colors).

So if the map is appearing blurry, then it is probably due to the resolution being used and if you are stretching it.

It is difficult to produce a decent large map with high resolution detail in MapPoint, but Mattys Consulting do offer this service:

    Printing Services for Microsoft MapPoint

Yes they can print to paper, but they can also print high res images to PDFs, bitmaps (I'm sure he'll produce a JPG if you insist), and even MapCruncher tile sets.

Gif is really limited to 256 colors?

A palette of 256 colors, yes. The individual colors are full 24 bit, but you can only have 256 total (so you could have 200 blues if your picture has lots of blues).

This limitation shouldn't be an issue for MapPoint images or most line drawings - it is a potentially big problem for color photos though.
