Sharing a map or a database ?

Hello,

I've got a map file linked on a access database.
I've got a soft witch opens the map file.

I've made a shared folder with the database inside.

I've installed 4 PCs with a network drive witch
points to this shared folder.

I've installed my .exe on all the PCs.

So, to resume the situation : 4 PC (with exe
file and .ptm file). 1 Server with a datafile.

When the PCs are running, they make a data
updates. This update doesn't work if 2 PC (or
more are doing it together).

So, is this a share method to allow the
simultaneous update ?

Regards,

Vincent BENNER

Hi Vincent.
I've haven't worked with MapPoint in a networked environment, but I have used Access that way.
I'd suggest looking on how you have your locking setup in you DB. For a multi-user DB, you can set it up so it locks either a single record or a full page of records when one user is making an update to it.

If the DB is setup to only lock the single record, I'd guess you'd be okay in the shared environment.
(2 people shouldn't be updating the same thing at one time.)
Also, is the mappoint information dynamically linked to the database? (I'm guessing it is, since you said everything works okay with a single user)

Does anyone know if MapPoint locks the file when others are in it?. (Similar to an Excel Spreadsheet which isn't shared. Only one person can update it at a time)
If that's the case, try giving each user their own copy of the MP file.

I know this isn't a full solution, but hopefuly it gives you some things to think about and try.

Good luck.
Rahn :)
