"free form territories": Do you mean you are drawing your own polygon shapes? If so, when you right click to get a size you get the length of the line. Ie. the perimeter of your area. I don't know a way to get the area of a shape without a little bit of programming. For large shapes, you then have to take into account the curved Earth which makes things a bit more complicated.
