I need to create a U.S. map showing where various alumni currently live based on a list of zip codes. If black and white, it could just be a point for each zip meaning that where most alumni are would be the blackest. Or if in color I might still use points but different colors as the density of the zips gets more crowded. Or maybe it's not points but gradations of color for whole areas. If there are only 5 people in Wyoming, those might be lost on a point map, but if it's gradations of color, it would be more clear where Wyoming stands. The specific way the density is indicated isn't as important. I just need to create a map of the U.S. that you can easily see where most people are located. I do not have MapPoint and have never used it, but I am handy with Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, etc. Can MapPoint do this or something similar? If I'm in the wrong place, can someone suggest a more appropriate product?

MapPoint does this easily.

You can get it here:
MapPoint 2009, Pushpin Tool, MapPoint for Dummies, Programming MapPoint in .NET (http://www.mapforums.com/mappoint.php)
