I have created a list of the names of the different Map Feature Categories, here:

Map Feature Categories in Microsoft MapPoint 2010 (http://www.mapping-tools.com/info/pushpins/features_2010.shtml)

I have already written an article for Eric that shows you how to modify the map feature settings in MapPoint 2010 using C#.

As of MapPoint 2010, map features are grouped into categories (along the lines of "water labels", "large city symbols", etc), and these can be switched on or off. Additional detail can also be requested.

The new article you mentioned has been added to the list above!

And here's the listing of the new MapPoint 2010 pushpins:

Pushpin Symbols for Microsoft MapPoint 2010 (http://www.mapping-tools.com/info/pushpins/pushpins_2010.shtml)

These are very similar to the 2004/2006 set, but with a few additions. Also, some of the indices have changed (it looks like the flags were moved up with the standard geometric markers, so all intervening pushpins have higher indices).

Eric,

Any idea when MapPoint 2010 Europe will be available?

Eric Frost

I think the English version will be available at the same time as MapPoint 2010 North America. We will probably list it for sale shortly - in the next few days.

I note from the MS website that currently MapPoint 2010 Europe will be arriving in Jan 2010.

How can I find out when the road networks in my State (Washington) are updated in MapPoint?

Eric Frost

I would say that they are, but post a screenshot from a previous version and I can reply with a post with a screenshot with the same are in MapPoint 2010.

Would this help you evaluation?

Does anyone know of the issue of Broomfield County, Colorado has been solved with MapPoint 2010. When mapping to the censustract level in Broomfield county, MapPoint errors out on some censustract numbers as un-mappable. You can see the tract numbers on the map, but MapPoint does not acknowledge these numbers as available to add data to the map. For example, income level of censustract to maps.

Do you have some sample data or screenshots to test? If you give specific instructions on how to test I am happy to do it for you. Or -- you can download the trial version and test it yourself -- let us know!

Hi, has anyone installed MapPoint 2010 on XP SP3 with Office 2002? I'm not seeing the Excel Add-in automatically after the install like I do when installing it on a PC with Office 2007. If I try and manually add it in (C:\Program Files\Common files\Microsoft Shared\Geography\MPOAI17.dll) I get that this is not a valid add-in. Can't find anything from Microsoft stating if MP2010 is compatible with older versions of Office.
Thanks!

Is there a trial version of MP2010 Europe available yet? Also is there anyway yet that you can save Map files in previous versions - i.e. can I save a file in MP2006 format using MP2010 so that users who only have older version can still read the files?

Eric Frost

MapPoint 2010 Europe is not available yet. I'll see if I can get a release date.

You cannot "save down" to previous versions. You would need to create the file using the old version.

Thanks - on another subject, can MP2010 work in layers yet (as you can do in Visio for example) for polylines and push pins and can individual polylines be joined together to form one line at all?

Eric Frost
10-20-2009, 09:23 AM
It's not nearly as sophisticated as Visio, but "layer" functionality is much improved with MapPoint 2010... you can now hide datasets and you have much finer control over the built-in cartographic layers with the Map Settings pane.

To manipulate shapes, see the MPSuperShape tool... it's an add-in from Mapping-Tools.com

Does anyone know if there will additional international versions of MapPoint besides Europe i.e. South America or Asia?

Thanks,

I just got Mappoint 2010 and I'm about to buy a GPS to go along with it.

I've narrowed my choices down to Nexstar Snap7 or the Garmin 7200.

Has anyone interfaced with the Nexstar Snap7? I need to enter address into mappoint, have it plot it out and send it to the GPS. I'm pretty sure the Garmin supports this (as per the MP2010 website) but I wondered if anyone knew if the Nextar does (without MSN direct)

Thanks,

Tangent

Tangent, it doesn't have to be a Garmin device. You can send addresses of your trip stops to any GPS navigation device that is capable of using GPX files. So the only question is if the Nexstar Snap7 can use .gpx files.

Hi Jonathan,

The new 2010 version has approximately 12 month fresher map data, and also it has map coverage of 43 European countries as opposed to 36 countries in the previous Mappoint 2009 Europe. The list of countries, and a few additional details, can be found in this review (http://www.laptopgpsworld.com/microsoft-streets-trips/2736-review-microsoft-mappoint.html).

When I copy and paste maps from MapPoint into PowerPoint, after I have saved the slides everything looks great. When I re-open the pp slides, the maps and legends are not there. It says that it is looking for a link. Sometimes the map is there but not the legend box with the color.

Also, some of the maps that I saved, when go back to view them in MapPoint, the colored territories do not show on th emap. The color is in the legends and the map shows an outline of the mapped territory without the colors.

I am using Office 2007 with MapPoint 2010.

For the presentation, I had to copy and paint the object. I would like to jsut copy and paste the maps and legends.

Hi. We sent the following questions to Microsoft a couple of weeks ago, but haven't received a reply. Can anyone help?

We are looking into integrating maps into a software application that we developed. We have downloaded a trial version of MapPoint 2010 and are making good progress in evaluating it.

Before we can decide whether or not to integrate MapPoint maps into our application, please can someone help us with the following questions:

1. We would prefer not to install the full version. We'd rather just package the MapPoint ActiveX control with our application. Is this possible?
2. If so, what type of licence do we need?
3. How much does it cost for each PC that the runtime (?) licence is deployed to?
4. How do we buy the necessary licences?

Thanks. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Eric Frost

Sorry, the answer is no.

MapPoint does require the full install because it needs all the maps and other data to make the program run.

There is no ActiveX control only pricing, you do need the full version.

Thanks, Eric. It is a shame there isn't an ActiveX option, but at least we now know what will be involved. Thanks once again for your help.

Hi Guys

I have jus started using the Microsoft map point 2010 to aid our sales coverage across mainland UK.
We are a large clothing company who distribute to retail outlets across uk. Our aim is to see which part of UK need exploring by using the map point to highlight (using the pushpin) where all the locations of the customers.
I have created an Excel sheet which consists of a unique number for each customer and a 2nd coloumn that icludes the post codes for each customer.

I have linked the data frm the sheet to the mapping point application and has found the locations. Please could some tell me of how I can view add the customers details (Name, address & email addy) when i hover over each individual pushpin??

Kind Regard
djmoali

Trying to run the trial version i get the attached error.

All three files are downloaded, and in the same directory

Try putting the files in a subfolder under My Documents, that way you can be sure the application would have create privileges in there.

Eric

Thanks for ther response, While looking at this i think i have discovered the reason, despite the file looking as if it had finished it actually hadn't, the download had dropped out without a warning, so the file missing is in incomplete download issue!!!!

I am going to schedule the download for later and see if it works after that.

Hi,

You cannot. You could if the structure of the mappoint database was published, but as far as I know it is not.

Hey Eric - just using Mappoint 2010 for the first time today. Do you know if business parks are available for Canada? I do a search for business parks in MP and it only gives me ones in the US.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Eric Frost

Business are supposed to be places for work, not play! Leaves the parks open and free - don't crowd them with businesses and factories! But seriously sorry I don't know.

j_dub99, you may have a better luck searching for individual businesses, for example you may not be able to locate "Smart Center", but you may find "Staples".

My business wants to purchase MapPoint 2010 which will upgrade us from the 2009 version. Can anyone tell me what issues we might face with opening & accessing/editing our maps saved in the 2009 version with our new 2010 version? It will take some time to transition everyone to the 2010 version, so we'll have employees using either 2009 or 2010 and both will need to access & create maps.

Are there compatibility issues we should plan for? If so, is there a work-around so both version can be used to access & edit maps (do we need to save-down from 2010 to the 2009 version when creating new maps in vs. 2010...is that possible?)

I appreciate any guidance anyone can give me on this.
Thank you!

Hi,

As far as I know the saved maps in the 2009 version can open / edit in 2010 version.

Has the Broomfield County problem been solved? MapPoint doesn't acknowledge some Broomfield county censustracts as valid geography to add mapping data to at the censustract level. Please see attached pdf of screen shot of censustracts that are missing data.

Thanks.

Good morning,

I'm trying to find out if there are updates to MapPoint 2010 on a regular basis where it will update new strets. I noticed that there are streets listed in a hardcopy map book that are not yet listed in MapPoint 2010.

I own a landscaping company, and I get calls from potential customers in new developments on a regular basis.

Thanks in advance

Hi Paul,

Unfortunately not. You have the most up-to-date map data available since you have the current 2010 version. To get fresher map data, we will have to wait till version 2011 is released.

MapPoint 2009 introduced the ability to show the current map view in Virtual Earth (now Bing Maps). This is now available in the API with the Map.ShowInOnlineMap() method.
