some of our users have upgraded to 2009 on their own. it has created a problem for us b/c these files cannot be open in 2006 it seems.

does anyone know of a way to open or convert a 2009 file to be able to open in 2006?

You would need to export all the data out of the MapPoint 2009 PTM file which can be a pain, and then re-import into MapPoint 2006.

Or find the source files and re-create the map in MapPoint 2006.

If you have the budget, it might make sense to get everyone moved to MapPoint 2010.

well we tried 2009 and no one liked it. it seemed a lot more limited that 2006 is what we need it to do. it seemed a lot of pushpins were missing. the drawing tools were dumbed down.

has this been re-vamped for 2010?

Yes, they took notice of the negative feedback from MapPoint 2009 and made several "fixes" as Richard refers to it in his overview of new features..
