MapPoint 2010 introduced a phenomenal new feature with MapPoint 2010 - the Map Settings Pane and corresponding API MapFeatures Collection and MapFeatures object. (For information on programming with MapFeatures and MapFeature, see Using the New MapFeatures Collection and MapFeature Objects in MapPoint 2010 (http://www.mp2kmag.com/a158--mapfeatures.mappoint.html) ).

It is now possible to fine-tune the map layers by controlling whether or not various layers and their corresponding labels show up, and the amount detail labels (more detail or default setting).

I think for both long-time and new users, it may take some time to get used to having that level of control over the look of the map. I'd recommend for users of MapPoint 2010 to take some time (20 to 30 minutes) to play around with the Map Settings to become familiar with all the options and make a point to revisit the Map Settings Pane every time before producing any screenshots or final output to see if there are some modifications which can be made to make a better map.

See this post and click on the attached thumbnails for several examples of maps which can now be created using the Map Settings Pane of MapPoint 2010.

Is there a way to change the settings for populated places? I would like to be able to show labels for towns that are 40K are greater.
