Does anyone know if or when the download "Spacial Data Import" will be available for 2011? I loaded the older version but it gives nothing but errors when trying to read shapefiles.

#1 Nope. That's a very old code example for developers, which didn't really work well in the first place.

#2 You should check out some modern add-ins like MPSuperShape which might do what you want.

Most of the limitations in the import options (for ESRI shapefiles, MapInfo MIF, etc) are due to the MapPoint shape model (eg. no holes, no data fields).

I just used the spatial data import add-in with 2011, it would start to import shapes and display them on the map then it appeared to be unresponsive for several minutes (5000 shapes were being imported), and the completed map would suddenly appear.
