I'm trying to make sense of the following geographic location data and post it to Map Point 2010. Alcohol and Drug Services Study (ADSS), 1996-1999: [United States] (http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/icpsrweb/SAMHDA/studies/3088)

Can someone take a quick look and help me connect some fields?

Hi Balrog,

Thanks for you inquiry and welcome to the site!

There's a ton of different data there, what specifically do you want to map?

Alcohol and Drug Services Study (ADSS), 1996-1999: [United States]: Data Files (http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/icpsrweb/SAMHDA/studies/3088/system)

Also, what geography level? County or State or ?

If you post some sample data that might be easiest.

Why certainly! Actually, someone came to my rescue this weekend and pointed out that (1) "MP2010 only has 938 MSAs defined, and 3141 counties. So some MSAs will
not map. But all states and counties map fine." and (2) I was suffering from "new application overload"
All I am looking for was a 1-to-1 relationship of incidents to get a feel for what services were being offered and availed of from the data. All the category fields are superfluous to me.

Posting a couple of lines from the data here looks horrific. The datafiles ARE huge. The PDF runs through the field descriptions adequately. Its MP 2010 which does a sorry job of documenting their fields and how they relate to STFIPS, CTYFIPS, COUNTY, MSA, and CBSA. There's a tab delimited, headered file, suffix *.TSV that I have made the most use of.

Maybe attach a Excel .xls or .csv file.

Counties are smaller than MSA's CBSA's, right? So should this data be mapped by county?

I see there are two different values for these records in the Year column. Would it be appropriate to filter out the years so they all match or is that OK they are different years?

Dates are subjective to analysis, nothing to do with mapping.

MSAs, CBSAs, counties are all independent of each other.

For a particular worksheet or table you want to map, you should have one row per level of geography, e.g. one row per county or one row per MSA. I don't think it would make sense to have it mixed together in the same table.
