I have the territories divided by postal code. How can I determine the square kilometers of each postal code (territory)?

Please help.

Hi Husky,

Welcome to the forum!

MapPoint by itself would not be good with this, but you could draw closed shapes to approximate the boundaries and then use some external tool to get the characteristics such as area for the shape.

I'd probably export to mid/mif, and then open up in MapInfo Pro to get the area, although MapInfo Pro costs ~ $1,800 per license :-/

Any recommendations from others in the forum?

Have a look to the attachment.

If you like this MapPoint-AddIn, you and all other Mapforum users can send us an email to get it for free.

Habe a look to the full documentation (http://www.wh-en.mappoint-tools.info/GA/scr/html/InteractiveVierwer/satellitenbild_-Flaeche_uebernehmen.htm).

Kind regards
Manfred

Great! I thought you had showed me something like that but I could not find it in your documentation. Is there a way to link to specific sections of your documentation?

Hi Eric,

Have a look to this documentation (http://www.wh-en.mappoint-tools.info/GA/scr/html/InteractiveVierwer/satellitenbild_-Flaeche_uebernehmen.htm).

Its one of the features of IC-InteractiveViewer.

I suggest: download and install the complete - IC-GeoAnalysis-Suite (http://profit100.eu/download/ic-business-tools.html) (40MB).

Kind regards
Manfred

One possibility is to purchase an outside zip code dataset that includes square miles; I have been using one at zip-codes.com for $150. (I haven't read everyone's replies to the thread, so my apologies if I'm repeating others' suggestions.)

Thanks EPJohn and welcome to the forum!

By the way, I think there's some cheaper zip code databases, I see one advertised for just $5, but I think $25 to $50 is common, but you'd have to check to make sure they include area.

zip code database - Google Search (http://www.google.com/search?q=zip+code+database)

I am not sure what the other posters are on about

Mappoint will do this for you in a few seconds

all you need to do is use the data mapping wizard

for example i pull square miles/km for the postcode in the UK

use the data mapping wizard -->

select shaded area -->

add demographics to map --> next -->area in square KM --> select district level or area level depending on how you want it

chart the data range (not that this matters)

result is you have a colourful map! however all you need to do is highlight your map or drag select then export to excel

you then have a list of all the postcodes with a square mile/km (mile on calculation) next to them, then i use this list to reference my own postcodes or territories vlookups etc from an excel formula

you dont need to spend a penny on the other data bits you now have reference of square KM for all your postcode areas/districts
