Hey All,

I've been trying to import the 2010 Census data into MapPoint 2009 and am having some trouble. Does anyone know any good resources I can refer to? Or maybe even give me a quick rundown on how to do it?

Thanks, anything is appreciated .

How far have you gotten and what trouble are you experiencing?

Note that census tract boundaries have changed, so it would be pretty hard to import that data, you would have to translate all the new data into the equivalent old boundaries first, I don't know if it would be worth the effort. Probably better to use other software such as PB MapInfo Pro.

On the other hand, it should be fairly straightforward to import county and state data.

Hey Eric,

Thanks for the quick response. I am trying to import ethnicity demographics on a county level. I've downloaded the .dp file from the Census Bureau's website and unzipped it. I have imported into Access 2010, headers and all. When I try and import the Access database into MapPoint, that's where it all goes downhill. I don't know if I am missing a step or doing something completely wrong.

Sorry for not really knowing, I have just begun using MapPoint and am not 100% familiar with everything.

Thanks.

Hey Eric,

I have been able to find the data using the American Community Survey and successfully put it into a Excel. Once I have the counties arranged, I might let you know if I'm having trouble with the "territories" and the mapping at that point.

Thanks again for all your help!

Best wishes.

Can you post your Access database as a zip attachment in this forum? Then I can take a look.

Also, more specifically what error or problem are you having?

Great! After you put it in Excel, were you able to import into MapPoint? Maybe post the Excel file on here as a zip file attachment?

Hey Eric,

Thanks for all your willingness to assist! I have successfully imported the data into MapPoint but I had one quick quick question about filtering data from the maps.

I have attached for you two Excel documents. One is the population of different ethnicities in Florida and the second is of income levels, both are by counties in Florida.

Is there a way to layer the maps to filter out a specific population so that you can focus on specific demographics? For example- low income (<$70,000) Asian Indian.

Thanks!

Can you post your MapPoint PTM files with the data already imported into MapPoint?

Thanks!

Hey,

I have attached the population demographic PTM in the zip file but whenever I try to link the income Excel file with MapPoint it closes me out. I've tried 5 times now and it keeps quitting without prompting me. Is that a common issue with MapPoint?

Thanks much!

You're trying to link it? Can you just import it?

Hey Eric,

Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you, I have been out of the office.

You are correct, I have been importing the Excel spreadsheet into MapPoint. I am trying to figure out how to layer them on top of each other to pull out specific demographics (ie. low-income Asian Indian). Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Hey Eric,

Sorry to keep pestering you but every time I try to import data now, it just closes me out of MapPoint. Is this a common problem with MapPoint? I came across a thread with another user who was experiencing the same problems. I have moved my Excel documents to a different server (whereas it was previously on my hard drive) yet the problem still persists. Do you know why this is happening?

Thanks!

Can you post one of the files you are trying to import?

Attached is a per capita income spreadsheet by county in Florida. Every time I try to import it, MapPoint closes me out without letting me save anything, it just exit's.

No problems with your file.
I think it should look like the attached picture.
