Hi,

For defining territories, I have a list of UK postal area codes including one for Northern Ireland (BT for Belfast). However, it is not supported even though it belongs to UK.

Is there anything I can do?

Christian

Probably not.. if you don't see it working, then it's not going to work. There is no way to edit or add additional geographies to work with the Territory functionality.

One thing you might consider is to just use the drawing tools to mark out and depict your territories, then you're not stuck with the limitations of the Territory tools and could just draw any arbitrary shapes onto the map.

Eric,

Thanks a lot for your insights. Quite disappointing for a product like MapPoint not to support Northern Ireland as it clearly belongs to UK.

I will try to use your suggested work around but again, this should be part of the core functionality of MapPoint going forward.

Are you aware of any alternative products?

Thanks & regards,
Christian

A lot of postcode products don't support Northern Ireland. Last time I looked (admittedly almost 5 years ago), the Ordnance Survey's flagship "Mastermap" product did not have post code data for Northern Ireland, Isle of Man, Channel Islands or the Gyrobank. Yes Northern Ireland is a part of the UK; the islands are bailiwicks but closely tied; and it seems odd that the Gyrobank is the only 'special' postcode that is missing.

Other post code datasets often lack many of the Scottish islands.

Hi Richard,

Thanks for your reply, very intriguing indeed!

While it seems common knowledge that certain postal areas are just not supported by the mapping tools currently available, it is hard to imagine why something as static as post codes can't be integrated fully - once and for all. UK postcodes were introduced back in 1959 and I find it mind boggling that software developers have not mastered full integration yet.

Any thoughts on WHY would be greatly appreciated.

Christian

... I suspect because as fast as the maping software is updated the post office introduce some more...

Experian MicroMarketer G3 supports irish territories. You can then export the shape file into MapPoint to give boundaries. To then be able to navigate to them if you allocate x, y, coordinates and closest Postcode these can then be imorted to give a searchable tool.

Hope this helps

If you need postal geographies for Northern Ireland you could take a look at Maptitude UK: Maptitude Mapping Software for United Kingdom (http://www.caliper.com/Maptitude/International/unitedkingdom.htm)
