I am new to MapPoint. I was told that I can get demographics data for a 3 and 5 mile radius surrounding a particular address. Note, I do NOT want demographics data by zip, I want data within a particular distance surrounding a specific location, as I research locations for the placement of new locations of my business. Am I able to do that? Everything I've seen thus far has been by zip.

Thx in advance. JL

It also has census tract information, albeit with 2000 census boundaries.

Think about what you are asking: Such statistics are only freely available in aggregate form (eg. by zip code or census tract). Do you really want individual location information? The age/etc breakdown of each address? The Census Bureau does not provide that information for what I hope are some pretty obvious privacy reasons. There are marketing companies which will sell you something similar - basically mailing lists with qualifying information. You will have to buy that kind of information.

Thank you for the response, much appreciated. I definitely understand your bit about privacy for some of the statistics, but the short answer is 'Yes', I do want this info, and I was specifically told by somebody in the same business as I that I was able to do this. The most important info is population (estimate, perhaps, obviously I wouldn't expect it to be precise) within the radius. I would be fine with just that, if available.

If it isn't possible to do the above with MapPoint, is there an alternative? OR, is there any way to get an estimate population within radius by aggregating the percentage of populations of the surrounding zips based upon the land area within each zip that the circle surrounding a selected location represents? This latter bit would have to be intelligently massaged by viewing the surrounding areas, as obviously the population within a zip is not evenly distributed, but it would be a good start.

Thx again in advance for response. JL

It is possible to do "Area Proportion" splits like you describe using professional GIS software e.g. MapInfo Pro ~ $2,000 but you would also need to buy the data for use within MapInfo Pro. You might look into a vendor who will sell you reports?
