Dear all,

I thought Mappoint could be a valuable help for my company, so I download the trial version of 2013 and made some tests. However, now I'm not so confident it can be helpful, because although i understand the software is very useful for somethings i was not able to do basic ones. I still have some days of trial, let's see if you can help me. These are my needs:

I have a huge database on excel, that I'm continuously updating. Is something like this:
For customers:
Name of customer;offices locations;type of products;sales;decision maker. the same customer can have different offices locations (i have a row for each office, like Customer A;location A / Customer A; location B)

I just want to import the data from the excel file (which worked pretty well, as it did the location finding), pin it on the map, and then just be able to filter the pins as I which, by any of the topics above.
So, what i want is to have a pin for Customer A, then be able to filter the offices that sale product A and see information like their sales performance or decision maker name. Or to filter all the customers that sale product B, without choosing particular customers.

Basicaly, I just want to have a "map pivot table".

I was not able to do any of that. If I use "multiple symbol" i can't hide or unhide different ones, if I use pushpins I can not separate by customer, so it won't work.

So, is it not possible to do with mappoint or I'm just not able to find out how?

Thanks in advance.

If you need to perform database filtering and be able to control the map/layer visibility of those filters directly from an out-of-the-box interface then the "Maptitude Mapping Software (http://www.caliper.com)" may be a good fit for your needs and budget.

This is a clear limitation of MapPoint out-of-the-box.

Basically, what I think you want to do, is separate each customer's pushpins into separate worksheets so they are imported as separate datasets.

The you can hide individual datasets.

Obviously this can be time consuming for lots of customers/datasets, so a macro can automate this.

I have actually been working on a custom import macro for a client off and on this past month, they might have 5000 locations with 60 different customers so the macro

- sorts by customer and
- then loops through the big table with 5000 locations
- separating each customer into a separate worksheet and
- importing the worksheet

This is all done automatically and might take 10 seconds to 2 minutes depending on the number of locations.

We use nice custom Pushpin symbols so the Legend and map are very clear.

Let me know if you are interested in pursuing this with MapPoint and I could help.
