Information within polygon

A seperate issue (but kind of linked) to my previous post is it possible to retrieve information for areas contained within a polygon (ie streets, Post Code sector)

I've now read a number of previous articles and it appears that this isn't possible, has anyone come up with a way of doing this or is there something that I could buy that would do this.
