Locate nearest polygon shape

Does anyone know if it is possible or how I could go about locating the nearest polygon shape or line to a location or pushpin using VB, I thought about something along the lines of doing an ever increasing radius search from the location/pushpin but I couldn't figure out how to return when the search comes across a shape.

Any ideas would be heplfull

How about you use the a QueryCircle to return a dataset and then you filter those out for objects with a Type property equal to geoAutoShape or geoFreeform or whatever it is that your looking for.
