So any suggestions as to which product to switch to? I would like to see a product that is more global.

Have you seen the stuff they've built into Excel 2013? Excel Power Map and Power View

Have you heard of any alternatives that can be incorporated into ActiveX/COM/.NET environments?

Winwaed is exploring our Maptitude Mapping Software: https://twitter.com/mappingtools/statuses/492646873249746944

We would be happy to assist you with any questions you have about Maptitude ( Caliper - Mapping software, GIS, and transportation planning software (http://www.MappingSoftware.com) )

Does it have ActiveX? Is there a compatibility mode as a drop in replacement to mappoint?

Maptitude has COM and .NET interfaces. There's also a macro language. The API is a lot more sophisticated that MapPoint's.

We are also searching for an alternative for MapPoint (at least for the long-term Future) and Maptitude seems to be promising. Everything i read about it was impressive but one post from the Maptitude Yahoo Group irrates me: "The Maptitude GISDK programming environment does not support routing and shortest path functionality." (https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/Maptitude/conversations/messages/4696).

So what does this mean? Is not every Functionality available with Automation (in contrast almost everything that can be done with MapPoint is also programmable with VBA)? Is such a simple task as calculating the shortest (or fastest) distance between 2 or more Waypoint impossible to do with an VBA Macro from Access or Excel?

That would be very unfortunate and would of course disqualify Maptitude as a MapPoint replacement for our purposes...

I'm not sure the release status but the next version definitely does have a routing API - I'm currently developing against it :-)

Thank you Winwared,

this is very reassuring. It really seems that Maptitude is the only MapPoint alternative in the Market or do you know another comparable product?

I played around a bit with Bing Maps which is useable from VBA via REST Webservices. It really has some nice features (e. g. real time traffic displayed in a Map) and is extremely fast in calculating routes but it simply does not have the flexibility that a Classic Win32 Desktop App has. There is a Bing Maps Control which probably is more flexible but they don’t offer it as ActiveX but only as a WPF (so it does not work with VBA or even NET. Windows Forms) and of course its not usable in an offline Scenario.

Yeah, Bing & Google are far too expensive for most routing applications (which are almost by definition commercial in nature).

I am finding Maptitude a little slower than MapPoint to calculate routes, but in many ways it is much more flexible.

Yes – the pricing of Bing Maps is exorbitant.

Maybe it is interesting for others who are searching for MapPoint alternatives:

I requested an offer for our requirements (including real-time GPS tracking of multiple vehicles). With MapPoint we had one-time Licencing costs of just under 6.000 $ and we used MapPoint 2009 for 4 years and then moved to MapPoint 2013. So that’s about 1.500 $ per year. As you can see below Bing Maps costs about 5.000,- $ (3.980 €) per annum and you have to bind to the contract for 3 years!!!
