I've occasionally browsed this forum for a number of years - probably from around 2003 or so. I work for a company that develops business management software for propane companies. Back in the late '90's, our software used a solution called Pepperwhite. Pepperwhite worked, but lacked route calculation/optimization. We moved to Mappoint (desktop) for that functionality some time around 2005 (we had worked on it earlier, but Mappoint's ActiveX control and Delphi had some squabble over the implementation of a certain interface; I found the solution here). Mappoint has served us reasonably well over the years, but its discontinuation is a serious issue for us. So I'm looking around for some reasonable replacement, and this seems a likely place to search.

It probably depends on how much and what type of routing you are wanting to do. Most of the low cost alternatives have little or no routing. For example Bing and Google (assuming online solutions are okay) are very expensive for bulk or commercial routing.

We are currently recommending Caliper's Maptitude product ( Caliper - Mapping Software, GIS, and Transportation Software (http://www.caliper.com) ), and we are porting a number of our products to this (MileCharter has already been ported). Compared to MapPoint, Maptitude is much more powerful and really is a GIS. The 2014 version has routing. It also ships with a free country data pack (more can be purchased). More countries are supported than MapPoint. As it is so much more functional, it does cost a bit more (still far less than ArcGIS!) and has more of a learning curve.

Thanks. I'm still investigating options. A coworker suggested TatukGIS. I installed the ActiveX and imported it (the VCL would have meant compatibility issues). I'm still kind of poking it with a stick.
