View Full Version : Can MapPoint Do This?

I am a novice programmer and I donít know if what I want to do is even possible with MapPoint.

I want to use the MapPoint control on an Access form and display all the addresses (with pushpins) within a query on it.

Then I want to select some of the pushpins then export that recordset (dataset?) in some way (excel or into a temporary Access table).

Then display those stops on a new map (or a cleared map) and then display addresses contained in two other queries.

Then I want to build a route, optimize and then export that combined recordset (dataset?) some way (into excel or a temporary Access table) so I can print a report.

I would really like for the records to be in the order they appear in the route. So the report prints in stop order.

And I want to use VBA. I know a little bit of VB.NET but I really want to stay inside Access.

I have already bought the MapPoint for Dummies, and almost all the code is for VB6. I donít know the first thing about C# so I donít think the new ďProgramming MapPoint in .NETĒ will help me much.

I have looked at the MSDN stuff on MapPoint and I havnít found anything on exporting data except to excel and then only what you capture in a rectangle and not the route and it doesnít preserve the order.

Any help would be much appreciated, even if you direct me to an article or a reference for me to read.

Thank You

Hi,

I think most if not all what you wants is possible with mappoint eather direct with the provided methods eather indirect where you can write it yourself to have some workarounds.

Some methods can be limited which is normal, but you have control yourself over the data if you keep it yourself in access, so you can do whatever you wants with it. About the order of a calculated route, I have some applications where I do a route report so I'm pretty sure about the order.

Any help would be much appreciated, even if you direct me to an article or a reference for me to read.

I think you can find pretty mutch on this forum. There is a search engine also and there are some articles about VBA I think. And for all other questions just fire them off here :)

If (when) you get stuck lots of people here will help you with specifics.

You might want to consider that bargain low price "MapPoint for Dummies" that Eric sells as a starting point.

He said he already has MP for Dummies. I think it is a good idea to stay in Access and use VBA, not C#. I program MapPoint a lot in Excel VBA, it is very similar and easy to use. However the C# (.NET) syntax is not much different so I think you might still find the Programming MapPoint in .NET useful to explain different parts of the API. Although the syntax will be a little different, you can still learn how to program those parts of the API by reading it.

On this site, for Access these two sample apps come to mind --
http://www.mp2kmag.com/a74--home.locator.mappoint.html
and
http://www.mp2kmag.com/a71--pf.changs.access.mappoint.html
though I'm sure there are some good ones I am missing.

Eric
