View Full Version : link data wizard won't let me use parameter queries

Why can't I link data using a query that has in the criteria something like [Forms]![Customer Info]![Customer Id] ?
When I go to use the link data wizard in mappoint, it doesn't list any queries with any parameters like the one above or one like [Enter Customer ID:].
Is there a reason?

Is this a query that exists in an MS Access table?

Yes, the query is in MS Access.

I've noticed this.. You just have to work around it.. Maybe there will be support for it in MapPoint 2003.

keywords: access, parameter, link data wizard, query

I even called Microsoft, and talked to someone about it. They couldn't give me a reason why, which I thought was weird. I can't figure out why they would allow a query with the criteria for customer id to be "1" but will not allow the same query with the criteria for customer id to be Forms![Customer Form]![Customer ID]. Werid.

I think it's like "software's never finished, it's released".. I don't think they fail to support this intentionally, they probably just haven't gotten to it yet.. MapPoint is still an immature product (3rd release, three years) and new features are being added rapidly..

You can easily work around this by creating a query that uses a linked text file that has a join to the field where you would otherwise use a parameter. Simply put, change the value in the text file just prior to running the stored query. For example if you were interested in only plotting data associated with Florida, you would change the value in the text file to FL. Having the linked text file joined to the state field in your table will yield the desired result set.

Thanks, that looks like an elegant approach... we used VB to re-write i.e. re-create the entire query via sql statements in the last project.
