Urban/Rural driving speeds

Apparently in earlier versions of AutoRoute you could assign 2 sets of speeds for each road classification, urban and rural, and the route calculation would then take this into account. This functionality does not exist in Mappoint or the recent Autoroute versions. We are currently in the process of contacting Microsoft about it to see if there is a solution and I was just wondering if anyone else had come across this problem.

You can set average speed to any value for each road type in mappoint.

I know you can set an average speed for each road type but apparently in Autoroute you used to be able to set 2 different speeds for each road type, a rural speed and an urban speed (which would be slower) and Autoroute would somehow know that for the same road type some instances were in an urban area instead of rural so the slower speed would be used for that particular road.

This must have been AutoRoute specific - I haven't seen it in Streets & Trips either (admittedly I haven't used many versions of S&T).

How long ago was it in AutoRoute?

Now I understand what you mean. That was indeed a setting in Autoroute, even before it was bought by Microsoft (I was dealer of autoroute when it was still the original company who wrote it). The problem with these settings is that this was not always correct, possible Microsoft did not include it in the other products.

Thanks for that information. We have actually managed to get hold of a version of Autoroute with this functionality in it to have a look at it. Clearly Microsoft have decided to remove all this functionality. I think we will just have to tell our customer that we cannot do anything about this since any development, assuming Microsoft were prepared to do anything and that is probably doubtful, would probably be very expensive.
