Support for Block Groups. Leaving census tract as the lowest possible level to view data makes Mappoint an interesting toy not a tool.

With the caveat that I am using MapPoint 2006, and thus the following may have already been addressed (though I see nothing about either in any information regarding the upgrade), I have two related suggestions:

1) A way to automatically generate radii from imported or linked data. Currently, I have to manually create a radius for every mapped pinpoint. With hundreds of pinpoints, this takes a huge amount of time. It seems that it should be possible to have a data field containing the radius.

2) Shaded, rather than completely opaque, fills on radii and other drawn shapes.

Thanks!

Definitely fill out the survey to let them know, they are going to collate the results of the survey to do product planning for future versions.

Survey completed! I hope they address this, as it's really the only thing that'd create a compelling upgrade for us.

I had this problem too but then I learnt the wonders of excel vba and can now print my radii at the push of a button.

He has a point though, there are a lot of obvious things such as popping up or down all of the balloons that have to be done with programming or third-party utilities.

By the way, I think you would probably just have to change one line of code in the "Drawing Drivetime Zones" example in the MapPoint Power Tools

http://www.mapforums.com/mappoint-power-tools-spreadsheet-8080.html

If you are interested and ambitious with Excel VBA I could adapt it to draw circles and post the code here.

Honestly, this is something that should be native, not 3rd party. It's something that I truly expected to be part of MapPoint when I first purchased the 2004 edition.

While I would have happily jumped at the possibility of jumping into Excel VBA several years ago, I simply don't have the time to explore something of this nature.

Re-reading the thread, I realized I forgot to thank you for your offer, Eric. :oops2:

So -- thank you! (Wish I still had time to devote to things like learning Excel VBA, but alas . . .)

Would it be helpful if I make it an Excel tool similar to the ones in the MapPoint Power Tools spreadsheet? I could probably get to it this weekend.. I have a few other things in the queue.

Nice to see that at least _Eric_ is still getting new MapPoint projects. {snicker}

Hehe, no I was offering to do it for free.. just as I would have posted the modified code for free (see above). You notice I didn't guarantee I'd actually do it, just that I'd try. We actually have family coming this weekend as it's our 4-yr-old's birthday and my time will be tight. My other projects in queue are getting a newsletter out which I hope to do tomorrow and another freebie project I volunteered to do....

By the way, there have been a couple people asking for consultants in the last few days.

http://www.mapforums.com/professional-help-mappoint-9896.html
http://www.mapforums.com/new-forum-need-consultant-9890.html

I've always been thinking I should launch a Consultants/Companies for Hire forum section that would be moderated... to keep it clean, only consultants/companies could start posts i.e. one post per company, although you could post updates in your own thread regularly. Would you be interested?

I'd definitely be interested.

Personally, I'm out looking to be in the workforce again. Things around southwest Michigan have really dried up, so I'm in Lansing to try the market here.

EricApologies for the late reply . . .
Thanks for the offer, Eric. Obviously, getting back to you so late, I can't really expect anything so I'll just say I very much appreciated the thought. However, you should note that I'm not a Plus Member so I can't even get the Power Tools spreadsheet, nor can I actually afford it. This is for a non-profit organization with a small budget, and every cent is precious. The same goes for my pocketbook. Such is life.

I'll just hope that MS sees fit to include some real functionality and user friendliness in the next version of the app.

No problem, I added a tool to the MapForums Plus section --
http://www.mapforums.com/drawing-radii-circles-9991.html

It's actually very little modified from the "Drawing Drivetime Zones" worksheet in the MapPoint Power Tools.

I have e-mailed you a copy :chef2:

Let me know if this does what you need... Have fun!

Here's the code in it's current form, as you can see not very sophisticated. I'll write it up as a little tutorial to be published in a future newsletter --

Set oApp = CreateObject("MapPoint.Application.NA")
oApp.Visible = True
Set objMap = oApp.NewMap

'start reading on row 11 of spreadsheet
nReadRow = 11
nShapeIndex = 1

'test to see if there is an address in column 2 (B) for the current row
Do While Cells(nReadRow, 2) <> ""

szAddress = Cells(nReadRow, 2)
szCity = Cells(nReadRow, 3)
szState = Cells(nReadRow, 4)
szZip = Cells(nReadRow, 5)
fRadius = Cells(nReadRow, 6)
nColor = AssignColor(Cells(nReadRow, 7))

Set objLoc = objMap.FindAddressResults( _
szAddress, szCity, szState, szZip)(1)

objMap.AddPushpin objLoc, Cells(nReadRow, 2)

objMap.Shapes.AddShape geoShapeRadius, objLoc, fRadius, fRadius
objMap.Shapes.Item(nShapeIndex).ZOrder (geoSendBehindRoads)
objMap.Shapes.Item(nShapeIndex).Line.ForeColor = nColor
objMap.Shapes.Item(nShapeIndex).Line.Weight = 2

nShapeIndex = nShapeIndex + 1
nReadRow = nReadRow + 1
Loop

objMap.DataSets.ZoomTo
objMap.Altitude = objMap.Altitude * 2

I just realized very similar code was done in a tutorial I wrote for a newsletter back in 2007! I thought it sounded familiar..

MapPoint VBA Tutorial, Vista Gadgets, Web Site Visitors Map, MapPoint GPS API, more (http://www.mp2kmag.com/update/mappoint.newsletter/2007-04-10/#features_sec)

In any case, the new one also allows you to specify the color of the radius.

In case anyone's wondering, I removed the text "Complete by March 31st" in the line above regarding getting a $25 gift cert for space to fit in the button on the right, not because the deadline will be extended again. So if you've been procrastinating, fill it out now. You will not get another chance.

Eric,

Sorry for not replying earlier. The example you gave me works as promised. Now I just have to get it incorporated into my own stuff. (Working 3-5 jobs tends to make for very little time to spend on such projects, however. But it's something I do want to have working, so that's a motivating factor.)

Thanks again for your generous help. You rock. :punk:

You are too kind, but thanks for following up and I'm glad it is working.. let us know how it goes integrating with your stuff!

I would love to have Turkey included. So I can use it for my business. It would be the perfect tool for my business.

For the next mappoint i wish a faster ImportData e AddPushpin method to increase speed in big batch data imports and a better memory management :rolleyes6::rolleyes6:
With these 2 features Mappoint 'll be seriously PERFECT XD

Eric,

I know I am way past your deadline for comments on new features, but I would like to ask if Microsoft ever attempts to get input from these forums concerning bugs in their existing product (MP2010)?

Has anyone successfully contacted Microsoft and had them respond with a patch or at least an acknowledgment of a bug with a promise of fixing it in the next release?

Just wondering (and hoping).

Thanks,
Bart j

Oh yeah, this is probably their #1 source of input.

But if something really needs to be fixed, it probably helps if they have input from more than one source... technical support, feedback from major customers, etc.
