Hi Guys/Gals

I guess this forum is my only hope to resolve this issue.

· I work for a UK national charity and we have 60 regional sites.

· These sites distribute government grants to underprivileged groups.

· We have a database that indicates (via Postcodes) the location of every given grant and I can import this into MapPoint and show the location.

So far so good

· The UK government has produced a set of boundary files that show area’s within the country of high social deprivation. (SHP and MID/MIF format).

I would like to import those boundaries into MapPoint so I can then show the target areas and the actual grant locations and in that way ensure we are directing the grants to the right people.

Actions so far

· Imported into my copy of MapPoint (MP 2004) the MapPoint Spatial Data Import COM Add-in from the MS site.

· Downloaded the sample data

· Checked it works, which it does.

· Obtained the government data in the form of SHP and MID/MIF files. These come in two types, full resolution (high definition but a large file) and generalised (low res but smaller file)

· Tested these files by downloading the free ESRI ArcExplorer SHP viewer. They work fine

Problems

· When I try to import either the SHP or the MID/MIF files to MapPoint I get the following error

Error in Render Shape, Error Number : -2147024809, Error Description : The parameter is incorrect.

Tried

· Contacting MS here in the UK and had one response that says they do not support the Add In but will look at the problem. As yet, still waiting (that was 3 months ago)

So over to you guys, any thoughts ? I can forward the boundary files if anyone wants to have a play.

I remember getting that error a lot. In tracing through the code I would find some odd things like a null value in the data causing the error. Some fiddling with the code or the data itself (I would use MapInfo) would resolve the issue. Please forward the data, I'll have a go at it, it's been a while since I resolved this issue so I need the practice I have PM-ed my e-mail address.

The Best way to resolve this is to trace through the code to where the error is occuring if you do a search for the I believe "RenderShape" it should be a good place to get started. In the past I have done a lot of tweeking to the code to remove these errors as well as convert UTM format (Mif and shape) files into the latitude and longitude used by MapPoint. If you like I can send you the modified spatial import wizard, though like MS I do not support it....

background : I have Mappoint 2004, Mapinfo 6 and I want to convert MIF files or SHP files to M2004...



Archive shows me that many guys have the same problem to me to import SHP or MIF files into Mappoint 2004.

In differents threads I can see that
* JSailor suggests to transform the files to wgs84, but I don't see this format into the Mapinfo dialog boxes.
* Eric suggests to debug the .com but I don't have VB6 and I don't understand how I can trace the errors while I'm importing the MIF file.
* hotrdd develop somthing to by pass the errors
...

hotrdd, if you are here, could me send your .COM modified ??

Hi All,

I have experienced the same problems with some data provided by a local authority here in the UK!

A quick look at the .MIF file tells me that the points appear to be in OS grid format (eg 163360.2 and 474104.1).

I assume that the Spatial Data Import COM object requires the points in decimal lat/lon (eg 51.36448 and 0.93702). I can't step through the code of the COM object (as has been recommended elsewhere in this forum) as it's in VB6 and I'm using vb .NET (2003) and the code won't convert!

I'm also assuming that MapInfo and ESRI can export polygons/polylines making use of a variety of coordinate systems. I've asked them to re-export the data as required and I'll get back to this forum with the results!
