Switch-To, Application Busy Error with VB.NET

I'm building an application with Mappoint at it's core, and I'm trying to create my own right-click menu. To do this, I'm trapping the right-click event on the control, and displaying my own context menu after cancelling the click event.

The menu displays fine, and if I select an item in the menu, that works too....BUT, if I take too long to select a menu item, I get a message box:

This action cannot be completed because the "[my application name]" program is not responding. Choose "Switch To" and correct the problem

I then choose Switch To and the application runs fine.

Anyone know of a way to correct this?
