TerraViewer for MapPoint BETA Available

View aerial photography seemlessly within MapPoint

-----------------------------------------------------------
TerraViewer is an add-on to Microsoft MapPoint 2002 (and above) that integrates the TerraServer USA web service (http://terraserver-usa.com), developed by Microsoft Research, seamlessly into the MapPoint North American Maps desktop product. The product enables end users to view terabytes of United States Geological Survey (USGS) archived aerial photography and sixteen color topographic maps locally on their desktop via a simple user interface directly within MapPoint. The date of the captured images is also displayed; imagery can also be made translucent so that the MapPoint maps can be viewed underneath.

The aerial imagery includes high-resolution 1ft color 'urban' orthographic images available for the major urban areas in the USA. Over 30 major metropolitan areas currently available including Washington DC, Chicago, Houston, Atlanta, Detroit, Los Angeles and Seattle.

The beta version can be downloaded from the following link:

http://www.mappingsolutions.com/terr...oint/setup.exe

Any feedback appreciated.

Terraviewer for MapPoint Beta

Very interesting tool. Just playing with it now, but can imagine that there will be utility in the longer run.

Seems as if the aerial image/topo map will not print. Only the basic MapPoint map prints.

Question: Is this by design and will this feature be available in the near term? Being able to print the images/maps along with the MapPoint data would add much value, assuming that the translucency option is preserved.

Thanks for making this available.

Re: Terraviewer for MapPoint Beta

Bruce,
Thanks for the valuable feedback. You are right is saying that printing is not available within the current beta version of TerraViewer for MapPoint. This is a 'request' that we have had from a number of beta testers already (we have had over 30 beta downloads so far). As you maybe aware the MapPoint (or the MapPoint API) doesn't allow the adding of raster layers on top of the MapPoint map. To enable it to display the aerial image/topo map image we have had to use some 'under the covers' trickery. This work-a-round enables us to draw on top of the MapPoint map. However printing is a different matter; there isn't an easy way to override MapPoint default printing operation. What we are in the process of adding to the application is the ability to 'save the terraviewer' imagery to the hard-drive. This would then allow you to print the imagery in a 3rd party application.

I hope this answers your question. We are aiming to ship the release version of Terraviewer for MapPoint towards the end of February.

Best Regards,

David.

TerraViewer for MapPoint beta expiration

Hello,

I just installed TerraViewer for MapPoint, and I got a message in MapPoint saying that the Beta Version has expired.

Has the beta trial been discontinued, or is it possible to turn the feature on?

Thanks,

Ajit
