Is there a way to get the altitude (height above mean sea level) for a location from MapPoint?

No. The altitude property of a map is a measure of the zoom level at which the map is displayed, not the height above sea level.

Now, 2 years later, is this still the case - MapPoint does not have a property (or extension) that would allow us to programmatically get the real altitude (height above sea level)?

I think there has only been one new version since then, there were only two new methods in the latest release.

I'm guessing that to get this data, either Microsoft would have to start including topgraphical information (even just internally, not necessarily displayed on the map) or someone would have to create some kind of data set to import that contained the topographical data.

This would add a LOT of data to the current data files.

I played around with Delorme's Topo3D or TopoUSA or whatever it's called. Interesting stuff, but they have a CD for each of 5 or 6 regions in the US. A full CD for like East Coast topo data.

Currently MapPoint (and at home, Streets and Trips) takes up a gig of HD space. Topographical data would make it like 5 gigs or so.

That'd be a great addon for MapPoint but for route planning and territories and all the stuff Mappoint is used for, it seems like overkill for how much overhead it adds to the system.

Just some thoughts.
