Urgent: Shading Problem. Can you help?

    Hi,

I am currently doing a Mappoint Analysis on a very large amount of UK call centre data. I have an urgent prob that I hope someone can advise me on.

I have been analysing call data by Local Authority. For each Local Authority I have added pushpins to represent the origin of each call as well as a shaded area map to represent call density in each postcode sector. Red shaded areas represent 'hotspots' and blue areas represent 'coldspots'.

I have noticed that in for some Local Authorities whilst all the pushpins are successfully displayed, when I go to map the calls by density (shading) not all the areas are shaded. I.e. there are parts of a Local Authority that have pushpins but no shading. When I export the density data to excel only the 'shaded areas' are successfully exported even though there were calls logged (by pushpin) in the unshaded areas.

    Hope this makes sense.

Can anyone tell me why this is happening?

One simple issue may be that you are importing/linking/defining the postcode sectors in upper case. There's a known bug in MapPoint which omits certain (but not all) postcode sectors unless lower-case is used.

It could also be an issue with your aggregation methods where a null or zero value is computed.

Many thanks for your post Paul. The information I imported into Mappoint was a CSV file that came from a central database. All postcodes have been logged automatically in uppercase. Is there any known way of fixing this bug?

It is doubtful that MS will issue a patch for this bug, especially since the next version should come out within a year.

If the issue is indeed the casing bug, you're probably best off pulling your database data using a case-change method such as LCase(string).
