    USAdemo.mdb

I was looking in the MapPoint data directory and I saw this file in there.
It's password protected, so I did a quick search online and didn't see any references to it.

Anyone have any idea what this database is?
(I didn't crack the password, so haven't seen the data.)

I would guess it contains the demographic data.. Note that's pretty easy to crack Access 97 passwords (e.g. http://www.trigeminal.com/code/DatabasePassword.bas ) but I don't think there's a way with Access 2000 or 2002.

Thanks Eric. Maybe I'll try to break in to see...

I've seen people advertising that they can break the passwords, but haven't seen that page before.

I'm curious if the European version has a similar sample database.

I don't think versions of Access more recent than 97 (which that one is) are vulnerable.. let me know if you find out otherwise.

    No luck with Access 2002

This particular algorithm doesn't work with 2000, but I found another that did. (The values used when XORing are slightly different). However, neither work on this DB, which is in Access 2002. (Well, at least that's what I have on my machine...)
I did try one of the free utilities which works on 2002. Its worked, but the demo copy only gave the first 3 letters. (Geo).
We'll see if I figure out next 2 letters....

    Uh Oh...

Now I'm going to feel the need to prove my progamming skills and figure out the rest of it...
(I've tried the obvious: GeoXP, GeoMP, Geo02)

If you know the first three characters of the password, you can simply search the binary that queries the database (MapPoint.exe) and search for matching strings that are good candidates for a password. This is why I can tell you that the password is Geo80. Took me 10 minutes though.

    Good Luck!

    Thanks

That's what I was going to do...just hadn't gotten around to it.
Thanks for saving us the trouble.
