| MAPPOINT WITH NEXTEL PHONES
There are 3rd party vendor use mapping technology to deliver solutions, such as Tracking of Fleet over the WEB. I used to have Web-based Fleet-Tracking service from a company called TeleNav. I had to go to Tele-Nav Web-Site each time, I had register all my Java-enable GPS capable Nextel phones with Telenev in order to track those phones. Since Drivers on the Road use those phones I could find out from Telenav Website detail description what is going on with this TRUCK, and Watch Driver Activity in real time and even can SEE MAPs in Real Time. BUT But...This is all Browser based ugly interface and Mapping is done through Map-Quest.I hated MAps so much I discontinue the service. I bought Microsoft Map-Point software 2004 for all of my PC with a thought it maybe able to provide me the similiar service without have a third party vendor(Middle-MAN). How do I acheive that, I red so much about Micorsoft Location Based service. some article even say I could use MS-Mapoint over TCP/IP (internet connection) and track my Wirless phones. I thought , all I had to do is get SMART PHONES with WINDOWS MOBILE OPERATING SYSTEM have MS-utility called LOCATION FINDER INSTALLED ON EACH PHONE and BINGO .... I was thinking since Location Finder updates MS with user location information I would be able to use MS-MAP-point Software to Locate my cell phones...But I am still Struggling ....and MS don't have better way to explain or do anything about it.. They even told me on the PHONE , The solution you are looking is impossible. I am shocked to hear word impossible from Micosoft on the phone. I hope you understan what I am trying to acheive.....Please Please help me what do I do to get what I want. Thank you.... |

Hi Kashif, It would be difficult to eliminate the "middle man" for a service like this. And MapPoint 2004 is not really the right tool for this job. To track your phones with mapPoint, you would need software in the phones to send GPS data to your own server, and server software connected to MapPoint to serve maps to either a browser or windows application. Not a trivial project. I believe location-based services use tower triangulation to get a fix on a phone, and this kind of service can only be provided by the cell companies (like MS LBS and their cell partners). So unfortunatley, if you want to track cellphones, you wil have to sign up for one of the commercial services. There are other tracking options, but they involve dedicated hardware in the vehicel and a seperate GPRS data account for each vehicle. There is a very inexpensive tracking system out there, but it only works for symbian series 60 phones (Nokia and a few others) or pocketPC's. Since you already have the data accounts on your phones, you may be able to use this system....you would need Bluetooth phones, a pocketPC and GPS receiver which would cost you about $400. The system uses MapPoint 2004 on your own server. Here is a link: www.geocities.com/prestonsystems/mytracking I hope this helps. Good Luck |

oxcarz is right Kashif. You'll spend 6 months on this to get a commercial system. Here are a couple other sites to consider. http://www.accutracking.com/ http://www.cheetah.com/Cheetah_Tracks_intro.htm http://www.geotab.com/ <- these guys just released some software that runs on HP hw6515 PDA/Phone/GPS/Camera. If you want more details feel free to PM me.

| Nextel phone mapping
The phone is java enabled. You can get a developers license from Motorola and write your own applications. You can hook and send the GPS data over the internet to a MySQL DB on a server. Then write an app to open the MySQL DB and plot the points into a Mappoint app. |
