Water Feature toggle

When I have water features turned on in MP 2010, there is something odd that I wonder if it is normal. For instance, Ripley county Missouri has the Current River running through it. At a zoom of 100 miles, the river shows up. Zoom any closer and it disappears, no matter what you do it won't show up. It seems like zooming out would cause it to disappear (actually does around 500 miles) but zooming in would retain the features. Is this normal? Anyone else seen this?
