Zip Code Counts to Territories

I have about 40,000 zip code entries in my database, which have been sorted by zip code, and I have a count for the number of entries for each zip code. This is in an Excel File with a column for the zip code, and another column with the number of times that zip code appears in my database.

I have manually created territories in MapPoint 2002. I want to import the zip codes and the counts, and generate a shaded map for the territories that I have created.

Is this possible, and if it is how do I accomplish it?

Thanks in advance,

In the create territory wizzard if you chose "create manually" go back and try "create from you own set of data"

Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't think it will help. The problem is that the territories are defined only in MP2K, and the Zip Codes exist in Excell without the corresponding territories. When I import the Zip Codes into MP2K, they get assigned to the correct territories, but appear only as push-pins. I'd like to shade each territory by the number of push pins, or even better, the count for each Zip Code.

Suggestions???

Thanks in advance,

Roger McClelland

Roger,

I thought I would list the steps in case others reading this thread that have never tried this would be able to recreate the steps.

I think this is what you are trying to do?? I could be wrong.

I created a excel file. One column called ZIP and one called Data
I inserted 2 rows consisting of 2 different zip codes. For the data I put 1 in the first row and 2 in the second row.

////////////////////
ZIP Data
21061 1
21144 2
///////////////////

Start the Data Mapping Wizard
Choose Shaded Area
Click Next
Select Import Data To Map It
Click Next
(Brings up the open file dialog)
Choose you excel file
Choose sheet 1
click next

The next screen has allot of info but make sure the column headings show ZIP and Data. Data type "ZIP" for the zip column and "other data" for the Data

There is also an information icon with text that reads "Matching records to: Zip code. Country/Region: United States

Click Next

There should only be one choice in the "Select the data field or column to map (it will be "data")

Show the data by: should be ZIP Code

Click Next

I did not change anything on this screen but the number of ranges is 2

click finish

Mappoint will zoom in to the 2 zip codes. 21061 will be shaded white and 21144 will be shaded green.

Hope this helps
