Zipcode Boundaries

I'm posting this here, but it applies to MapPoint as well.

What is a good source of up to date zipcode boundaries?
The answer is not as obvious as it sounds. The USPS defines zipcodes as a collection of points. These points might overlap other zip code areas, might be discontinuous, and might cross state boundaries.

"Zipcode polygons" are produced by third parties and going by this definition, can only be an approximation.

The Census Bureau created some zipcode polygons for its own use in 2000 - and these are available for download as SHP files.

But where does MapPoint and the other mapping suppliers get their zipcode data (centroids and boundaries) from? MapPoint shows signs of being updated between versions - and we're all used to the "but XYZ has this zipcode" - so there are more recent datasets in circulation.
